What Course Is Needed ?  

6-hour Venepuncture and Cannulation Awareness Course 
 
Suitable for Nurses, Carers, Medical staff and Support staff caring for patients who require a cannula inserted or phlebotomy services, particularly when COMPETENCIES are required. 
3-hour Venepuncture and Cannulation Refresher Course 
 
Suitable for Nurses, Carers, Medical staff and Support staff who have completed a previous course in the last 2 years.  

About Our Training 

Venepuncture and Cannulation Awareness Course 

This course is tailored for Nurses, Medical Staff, and Support Staff who work with patients needing a cannula inserted or phlebotomy services. It delivers an overview of crucial venepuncture and cannulation techniques. Participants will acquire the proficiency to not only identify but, more importantly, effectively manage complications associated with venepuncture and cannulation.  
 
Additionally, it thoroughly addresses the proper and meticulous assessment of patients' veins, thereby ensuring the successful execution of cannulation and the ongoing assessment of their veins using tools to identify and prevent serious phlebitis complications.  
These intricate procedures hold paramount importance in patient care. Therefore, our training goes beyond the mere imparting of theoretical knowledge; it also provides immersive simulated competencies. This approach unequivocally guarantees the cultivation of safe and effective performance, leaving no room for uncertainty.

This venepuncture and cannulation training is run regularly as an open course at our training venue in Morden, South London, thereby making it suitable for individuals or smaller groups to book onto. A shorter refresher course is available for participants who have completed a previous course in the last 2 years. 
 
This course can be run at your own venue or at our site in Morden, South London.  

Learning Outcomes 

On completion, participants will be able to 
demonstrate an ability to perform venepuncture and cannulation procedures. Furthermore participants will understand how to identify the appropriate vein, reduce the risk of infections and perform the procedures using an aseptic technique. 
 
Participants will learn how to solve problems with venepuncture and cannulation techniques and will know how to prevent complications.  
 

How Many Can Attend Training? 

We will run this course for a maximum of 12 participants. This class size is limited to allow all participants to take part in the practical aspects of the course. 

Who will Conduct the Training? 

Our expert clinical tutors, are Nurses with years of clinical and complex care experience and knowledge and are qualified assessors capable of assessing your staff’s skills. 

Course Duration 

We run two versions of this course. 
 
6-hour course-the venepuncture and cannulation course c last approximately 6 hours.  
3 hours course-a refresher lasts approximately 3 hours.  
 
 

Certification 

Participants will be issued with a certificate of attendance valid for a period of 2 years. 
 
A competency record will be provided for both courses.

Competencies  

A simulated competency for venepuncture will be conducted.  
A simulated cannulation competency will be conducted.  
 

Please note: Further supervised competencies will be required and is a necessity with this skill in the clinical environment for all staff to be deemed fully competent.
