The care required by those with spinal injury is a complex subject and it can have devastating effects if patients don’t receive this important specialised care. Covering Spinal Injury Awareness, as well as the important aspects of Autonomic Dysreflexia, Catheter Care & Bowel Care  
our courses teach participants how to safely look after a patient who has suffered a spinal injury, thereby reducing these devastating effects.

What Course Is Needed ?  

3-hour Spinal Awareness Course 
 
Suitable for Carers, Nurses, Healthcare Professionals or relatives covering spinal care, and importantly an understanding of Autonomic Dysreflexia.  
6-hour Spinal Awareness and Bowel Management Course 
 
Suitable for Carers, Nurses, or Relatives covering spinal awareness and most importantly BOWEL Management, where COMPETENCIES are required.  
6-hour Spinal Care Management Course 
 
Suitable for Carers, Nurses, Healthcare Professionals, or relatives, this course comprehensively covers spinal care awareness, encompassing causes and treatments. Furthermore, it provides a thorough understanding of Autonomic Dysreflexia, 

About Our Training 

Spinal Care Awareness Course 

 
This course will help any staff including Carers, Nurses, Healthcare Professionals or Relatives understand the causes and consequences of spinal injury. Furthermore our awareness course will concentrate on bowel, bladder and basic care needs with an emphasis on using this care to prevent Autonomic Dysreflexia. A serious and life threatening complication of high level spinal cord injury. Thereby enabling participants to help improve the lives of those with a spinal cord injury (SCI). 
 
Our Spinal Injury courses are conducted by practising and experienced High-Dependency and Spinal Care Nurses. These nurses possess extensive teaching and complex care nursing experience, as a result, we can ensure that our courses are taught by experienced practitioners who are well-equipped to deliver the content effectively. 
 
We can run this course at your own venue or at our new training centre in Morden, South London for your Group. Or we have open course dates.

Spinal Care Management 

 
There are two choices for the Spinal Management Course: 
 
Option 1 - Will cover the awareness course material as well as more in-depth knowledge about the complications of neurogenic bladder and bowel. Furthermore this course suitable for Nurses, and Cares will provide simulated competencies in bowel management in particular administration of suppositories, and performing of rectal digital stimulation and Rectal Digital evacuation of Faeces. 
 
Option 2 - Will not only cover the awareness course material and provide an overview of neurogenic bladder and bowels but will also delve into aspects of personal care, nutrition, and respiratory care. Additionally, the course will address the support networks crucial for helping patients adjust to life with a spinal injury. These comprehensive courses cater to all levels of care staff and are equally well-suited to allied healthcare professionals. Moreover, we are flexible in adapting the courses to precisely meet your specific needs. 
 
The option 1 of this course is run regularly as an open course at our training venue in Morden, South London, thereby making it suitable for individuals or smaller groups to book onto. Check out our course dates for availability. 

Spinal Care Management Course Summary.  

Each of the two options for this course option will follow the Spinal Awareness course with these appropriate additions dependent on option chosen.

Learning Outcomes 

Staff will have an awareness of the types of Spinal Cord Injury and important aspects of the care required. 
 
Staff will be confidence in recognising, preventing and treating autonomic dysreflexia. 
 
Participants will know about the support networks available and be able to help their clients in adjusting to their disability. 

How Many Can Attend Training? 

These spinal courses have a maximum of 12 participants, thereby effectively restricting the class size to ensure the active involvement of all attendees in the practical aspects of the course.

Course Duration 

3-hrs -the Spinal Awareness Course lasts 3 hours 
6-hrs -the Spinal Care Management Courses lasts 6 hours 
 
 

Certification 

The certificate issued depends on which course is attended.  
Participants will be issued with a certificate of attendance valid for a period of 2 years.

Competencies  

The following SIMULATED competencies will be completed during the Spinal Bowel Care training session.   

Administration of rectal suppositories. 
Digital Rectal Evacuation(DRE) of faeces. 
Digital Rectal Stimulation(DRS).
